TIME published a cover story on Internet.org. If you care about connectivity and technology, this is a must read. A frequent criticism of efforts to extend the internet in developing countries is that people don’t *need* connectivity. Surely food, clean drinking water and healthcare are more important? Well of course they are. But if you take the time to visit any of the communities just being connected for the first time – like we did in Chandauli, India – you’ll see how transformative the internet can be for ordinary people. The nurses in the village clinic who used their 2 hours of internet time each day to consult with doctors in Delhi. Schoolkids learning how to find information for their homework. The old man who stopped by the internet center to ask his son to look up a map for him – since he didn’t know how to use Google. It is telling that most of the people criticizing the value of connectivity are the people who enjoy it the most – well paid thinktank workers with iPhones and unlimited data packages in D.C. and New York. Connectivity matters to you, so why shouldn’t it matter to everyone – and surely everyone should have a choice? Half the world is not enough. #connecttheworld
