TIN - Consultório de Medicina Natural Is sugar a drug? As we know, consumption of added sugar has increased over recent decades and is correlated with numerous diseases. Rodent models have before shown mechanisms of toxicity, but only at concentrations beyond typical human exposure. Here we show that comparatively low levels of added sugar consumption (equivalent to merely 3 glasses of a softdrink/day) have substantial negative effects on mouse - survival (-35% in females), - competitive ability (-26% in males), and - reproduction (-25% in males). These findings represent the lowest level of sugar consumption shown to adversely affect mammalian health. Clinical defects of these mice were decreased glucose clearance and increased fasting cholesterol, while they had normal weight. Make your own lemonade!
