TIPS AHOY! This IS the season to be Jolly, isnt it? One of my sweetest friends here in Augusta, posted a rant, regarding tips (in desperation), because she had done a good job and no one was tipping or tipping very well for her commitment. Man! Ive been there!! .. and its lonely and cold. This is what I posted her, in reply .. It goes without saying that a tip, by definition, is a monetary reward for a task well done. Youve summarized in thumbnail sketches a plethora of examples of jobs and services that are tip-able, but are unique to each other in the manner and amount of a tip, when one is warranted. Consider cashiers, hostesses and doorman .. should they be tipped for the service they render and if you think so, why? These jobs are minimum wage and above; to tip one of them, that person truely HAS gone above and beyond, doncha think? The Pinnacle Club, a dining room restaurant in downtown Augusta, atop one of the bank buildings, offers exquisite cuisine and exceptional service. However, servers tips are pooled and equally divided at the end of the shift, with a part of it being given to the kitchen staff. Think about it. My point is that tipping isnt a topic you can toss into every arena that has a tip concept to it. Tipping is becoming the hidden income in some pretty odd places and that doesnt fair well for the occupations that have always required a tippng procedure JUST to make minimum wage. It clouds the consumers belief systems. For example, Dairy Queens and Dunkin Donuts do not require tipping, so why is there a makeshift tip cup on the counter by the register? Theres a worn Styrofoam or paper coffee cup sitting in the open with a handwritten Thank You or Tips message suggesting that before youve taken a whiff of your purchase, someone has done something worth tipping them for doing. Why is this habit any different from the panhandler seeking change at the bus station or on the sidewalk? You may feel that your arguments beg the question of raising the wage of employees to compensate you for this recurring disappointment in the value of your service. I say, youre baiting your hook with the wrong bait .. youre trying to fix your cars engine by changing its paint job. Tipping IS and should remain in the hands and minds of the consumer. However, you can make a difference in your tips by focusing on the reason people tip. They tip on what impresses them; what makes them feel appreciated.
