TNR Happens. . One night earlier this week, Dawn Shepherd, Shadow Cats’ Ace Trapper and Tori Morninglory were out in the tiny town of Thorndale (Tx) setting their traps for the night’s bounty. After their traps were set, they returned to the car to wait- another exciting night in the life of a trapper! As they stood there quietly talking, a police car quietly rolled up behind them and a uniformed officer stepped out. Fully expecting to have to explain and endure the pained reaction to their explanation, they waited for him to approach. . The stern face of the officer held their gaze but as he glanced at the open back hatch of their car and then back at Dawn and Tori, the look on his face softened and his next words came as the biggest surprise to them, “Oh please tell me you ladies are TNR’ing in Thorndale?” . As Dawn tried not to register complete shock at his words, she asked, “..and you know what TNR is?” He replied, “Yes ma’am and if ever there was a town that needs it, you are in it!” He went on to say that he distributed the free spay /neuter informational flyers from the Austin Humane Society every chance he could and that his Chief was going to be so happy to hear that TNR was happening in their town. He went on to say that if our trappers were ever in town during the day (trappers are so nocturnal!) they would like to take them to lunch and learn more. He spent time and gave Dawn his card and cell number in case she ever needed anything during her night time sojourns into cat country. . In the small rural towns that Shadow Cats and many others often trap in, to find an informed and proactive city employee like this officer is one of those amazing moments that help to make what we do just a little easier. It gives hope that the powerful concept of Trap, Neuter and Return is reaching the all corners of our world. It sheds light and hope. It fuels us. . I wonder who felt the most uplifted at the end of that encounter- our trappers or this officer…. Either way, Cats Win. . Thank you Dawn and Tori and all of Shadow Cats Trappers and all that help cats everywhere through TNR, advocacy, fostering and colony management. You save lives. . Dawn traps in many different areas for SC and in this video she talks about TNR during our work on the Williamson County hoarding situation earlier this year. https://youtube/watch?v=5xZjKK3Ot5o#t=642
