TO: All Kansas VFW Post and District Commanders SUBJECT: Letter of Introduction Gerald (Gerry) Shirel Comrades: VFW State of Kansas Commander, Lynn Rolf III, has requested I join his team as the new State Scouting/Youth Activities Committee Chairperson. Since there are approximately 145 VFW Posts in our State, we probably have never met. Accordingly, I will provide you some background information. I am a life member of VFW Post 7397, Lenexa, Kansas. I have served as public relations officer, Jr. & Sr. Vice, and one of those 5% who help keep the Post programs functioning…I served on –the-ground in the Korean War. I am ex-Air Force. I attended tech schools in Wyoming and Japan. Serve tours in Germany and Turkey as a member of USAF Security Service. Ended my military career assigned to HQ 29th Air Division as a member of an “ORI” (Operational Ready Inspection Team). My civilian expertise is in marketing, sales, ex-magazine editor, photo-journalist, OEM manager of 13 off-highway trucks and construction equipment parts and service branches throughout the US. As your State Scouting/Youth programs representative, I hope to assist you with some new tools to promote these programs and available scholarships. I personally have participated in more than 12 Eagle Scout Courts of Honor as a keynote speaker for the VFW. I have a working knowledge of both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts organizations. In fact, I discovered and sponsored the very first Girl Scout to represent the State of Kansas for the 2012 VFW “Scout of the Year”. Most of you may not be aware that 2012-13 was the first year the VFW and Boy Scouts of America accepted the Girl Scout “Gold” award as equal to the “Eagle Scout” award. My first request to you Commander… Is for you to appoint a “Scouting/Youth Activities” representative who will be aware of all our VFW youth programs. We need to involve the Ladies and Men’s auxiliaries as part of these overall community programs. I would direct all scouting/youth activities communications to this contact person who will present this information to your local church groups, civic organizations, schools, PTA’s and Boy and Girl Scout organizations. My second request is to ask your membership to approve a donation of $10.00 or more, which would be applied to our scholarship and operating fund. Presently, we offer a variety of scholarships, plaques and trophies to the State winners of contests for exceptional performance in community and scouting projects. When you consider the current economy, etc. $10.00 from each Post would allow us to offer some type of recognition to the winners of these various scholarships. Attached is a donation form to use to send your donation to: VFW Kansas Department Headquarters, P.O. Box 1008, Topeka, KS, 66601-1008. Be sure to mark your checks “Scouting/Youth Activities fund”. I look forward to working with you and your representative in promoting all of our VFW scouting and youth programs. Please feel free to contact me any time.
