TO EVERYONE WHO DOES HEMA/WMA OR SCA FIGHTING! I recently got in touch with a company called Dark Victory who specializes in plastic armour (you may even use their kit!). The reason I got in touch with them is because I wanted to commission a HEMA helmet made from Kydex/ABS based on the work of Brian Hunt (here: web.emerytelcom.net/users/blhunt/helm.htm ) which would be superior to the fencing masks we all currently use in HEMA/Rapier and maybe even suitable for SCA Heavy. If there were ever a candidate for the perfect helmet, this would be it. Unfortunately he doesnt manufacture them anymore and even if he did, the waiting list would be several years. We all know that fencing masks arent exactly the most adequate protection, because they are not designed for what we do. The world needs a standardised, purpose-built head protector for all forms of metal weapon and historical combat. I firmly believe that this is the best candidate. The owner of Dark Victory concurs. He would need to invest in injection molds for this purpose as he currently works in HDPE rather than Kydex/ABS, but he has said that if theres a market with significant interest, then he is more than willing to do so. These helmets would be cheap. Perhaps not as cheap as a basic epee fencing mask, but not prohibitively expensive either. They would be stronger and more durable. They would cover the entire head and you can pad the inside yourself with closed cell foam pads (see: $5 camping mats) and a can of spray adhesive, or just wear an arming cap under it. Basically, theres no downside to this. So if this project is something that youd like to see come to fruition, please register your interest with jordan@darkvictory and spread the word to any other groups and individuals you think would benefit from a standardised HEMA helm. Thanks for your time.
