TO HELP WITH YOUR EFFORTS, HERES A START FOR YOU ALL TO LOBBY/FUNDRAISE - WE ARE TRYING TO CONFIRM WHAT IS BEST LOCAL ORGANISATION TO DONATE TO BUT HERE IS ROUGH TEMPLATE FOR NOW. AMEND FOR YOUR OWN PURPOSES: CURRENT SITUATION IN INDIAN-ADMINISTER KASHMIR The situation on the ground in Kashmir is very bleak. Communication is still an issue so the full extent of the flooding and damage has yet to be fully revealed. We are still struggling to reach a lot of relatives and family in the region. Reports to date highlight how in the main city of Srinagar river levels remain so high that residents have been forced to go to roof tops, and the situation in villages, where help is less at hand , is also very serious with hundreds of deaths already being reported and nearly 600,000 people still being stranded and waiting for help. The scale of the operation needed is quite terrifying and one thing that is certain is that the local authorities have been overwhelmed and unprepared for this flooding. Since international aid agencies (e.g. DEC) are also not permitted by the government to work in the region of Kashmir, aside from local authorities, a lot of the relief work is also being coordinated by volunteers. WHO WE ARE We are all volunteers who are wanting to help support relief efforts. I myself am a British-born Kashmiri whose parents happened to be visiting Srinagar when the disaster struck and whose family was in one of the worst effected areas of the city. We are working with JK Flood Relief (jkfloodrelief.org) which is a recently set up independent apolitcal initiative started by volunteers both locally and internationally who are working on supporting relief efforts in the region. JK Flood relief already has had support from IndiGo Airlines for shipping all over India, as well as several voluntary organizations, Goonj, Sajid Iqbal Foundation, Uday foundation, Twitter India, Kno.e.sis Center, Google India, Cipla, DeVil On Wheels, Biocon, and Emami. We are expanding to support local on-ground efforts in Kashmir more effectively – to include more organizations in the valley itself such as JK Yateem foundation, Chinar Trust, Kashmir Caring foundation etc.) The priority right now is ensuring essential supplies and medicine reach the region. WHAT WE NEED A list of items – both medical and essential supplies – has been compiled below. We would be grateful to know whether your organization can contribute anything that would be of value – in-kind assistance of items is preferable, although funding to procure items is also an option. We have volunteers in Delhi who can help organize the collection and local distribution of all aid. Please let me us know whether you can help - time is of the essence and we are keen to ensure relief reaches the people as soon as possible. MESSAGE TRACK FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDIA / LOCAL MPs etc. * Communication is still an issue so the full extent of the flooding and damage has yet to be fully revealed. We are struggling to reach a lot of our relatives and family in the region. * Hundreds of death already reported - the number rising every day and more expected to come with the after effects of the flooding. 600,000 people still awaiting rescue. * Damage to infrastructure has been enormous – houses, roads, bridges all submerged. * Local authorities have been overwhelmed and completely unprepared for the flooding * Government of India doesn’t allow external international aid agencies to help in Kashmir (e.g. Disaster Emergency committee etc) so a lot of reliance on overwhelmed local authorities and volunteers at the moment. * Most reports we have heard from family members is that a lot of rescue efforts have been carried out via volunteers with insufficient support from local authorities or army (Army rescuing VIPs, international and indian tourists and not doing enough for the poor and vulnerable) * We want government to exert more pressure on India to help British Kashmiris and allow international aid organizations to enter Kashmir.
