TODAY IN HISTORY - 1555 - Death of Pope Julius III: At the start of his reign, Julius tried to bring about a reform of the Catholic Church. Despite opposition, Julius allowed Jewish refugees from Spain to settle in Ancona in northeast Italy. He spoke out against the blood libel and opposed baptism of Jewish children without the approval of their parents. However, he was unable to stand up to other anti-Jew measures exerted by the Inquisitor General from the Holy Office. He also acquiesced in the burning of numerous copies of the Talmud and other Jewish books.
