TODAY IS THE 70th ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY: The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, were the landing operations on 6 June 1944 (termed D-Day) of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. The largest seaborne invasion in history, the operation began the Allied invasion of German-occupied western Europe, led to the restoration of the French Republic, and contributed to an Allied victory in the war. The two earliest films made about this famous invasion were Red Ball Express (1952) and The Longest Day (1962). RED BALL EXPRESS (1952):is a World War II movie based on the real Red Ball Express convoys that supplied allied forces after the Normandy Landings on D-Day. Directed by Budd Boetticher, starring Jeff Chandler, Alex Nicol, Charles Drake and Sidney Poitier. THE LONGEST DAY (1962):The D-DAY events, told both from both the Allied as well as the German side. It is a cult war movie with some of the greatest movie start of that time in it. Directed by Ken Annakin. The Longest Day, which was made in black and white, features a large ensemble cast including John Wayne, Kenneth More, Richard Todd, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Red Buttons, Rod Steiger, Leo Genn, Peter Lawford, Gert Fröbe, Irina Demick, Bourvil, Curt Jürgens, Robert Wagner, Paul Anka and Arletty. Many of these actors played roles that were virtually cameo appearances and several cast members such as Todd, Fonda, Steiger and Genn saw action as servicemen during the war.
