TODAYS CHALLENGE. Allowing the Old Testament Scripture to interpret New Testament Scripture. We begin by noting an important point. Jesus prophesied But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. Matthew 24:19-21 (NKJV) Here is where we have to be aware of Jewish customs and practices regarding the Sabbath. The city of Jerusalem was a Jewish dominated city which kept 100% of the law of Moses up to 70AD. The Gates of the city would be closed on the Sabbath: Nehemiah 13:15-22 In those days I saw people in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them about the day on which they were selling provisions. 16 Men of Tyre dwelt there also, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and sold them on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”SO IT WAS, AT THE GATES OF JERUSALEM AS IT BEGAN TO BE DARK BEFORE THE SABBATH THAT I COMMANDED THE GATES TO BE SHUT AND CHARGED THAT THY MUST NOT BE OPENED TILL AFTER THE SABBATH. Then I posted some of my servants at the gates, so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Now the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. (emphasis added) Because Jerusalem was a Jewish dominated city which kept 100% of the law of Moses up to 70AD the “gates locked on the Sabbath” which would hinder the Lords instructions to the Christians to GET OUT OF THE CITY before the Roman armies destroyed the city as Jesus said in Luke 21:20-22 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. Jesus lists 3 things that would hinder fleeing the city: Matthew 24:15-21 Pregnant or Nursing mothers would hindered for obvious reasons. Winter would hinder them because of exposure to cold and snow. Matthew 24:20. Sabbath day because gates of the Jewish controlled city of Jerusalem would be locked and they could not get out! Note the warning of Jesus was given “to those who are in Judea” (verse 16), not to in other parts of the world. They would also be the ones to see the great tribulation, not since the beginning of the world nor ever shall be (Matthew 24:21). Why was this such a great tribulation, not since the beginning of the world nor ever shall be again. God was bring judgment upon his covenant people by the Roman armies for rejecting their Messiah. Scripture comes alive when we set aside the old traditional teaching of men and allow Scripture to help us interpret Scripture.
