TODAYS HEALTH AND SAFETY MESSAGE: To all my friends engaged in - TopicsExpress

TODAYS HEALTH AND SAFETY MESSAGE: To all my friends engaged in agriculture today, please take time to stop and remind yourself that agriculture is still the most dangerous occupation in the UK. Almost one person a week dies, from a number of unconnected causes. Only last week we had a dreadful fatality on a farm in Norfolk. The most common causes are falls from height, contact with moving vehicles (nearly always fatal), contact with overhead power lines, livestock (bulls mainly) and slurry tanks (gassing). It is macho to call all this fuss just a bit of unnecessary paperwork and bureacracy, but if you think health and safety is expensive.....just try having an accident. To illustrate my comments, I would now like to relate some of the most stupid things I did, which nonetheless did not prevent me making it to the age of 18: 1. Falling off a stack of bales...thankfully onto loose straw. 2. Climbing the outside of a grain bin.....above solid concrete. 3. Lubricating moving machinery, because it was quicker than doing it stationary. 4. Driving the combine into a shed and realising just in time that I was nearly decapitated. 5. Jumping off mobile tractors, combines and lorries because it was fun. 6. and so on.....the list is endless...... Please take time to think......you may only be one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.......SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT
