Located in the parishes of Salir and Benafim, in the municipality of Loulé, the Rocha da Pena is a protected rocky outcrop, which, due to its geographical location, provides a unique vision of the natural beauty of the region. With an area extending over 637 acres and a maximum altitude of 479 metres, this rural monument creates the habitat for a wealth of fauna. Among more than 120 species of birds sighted patrolling the air, highlights include the Eurasian Jay, the Common Buzzard and the Grey Heron. Beyond the fascinating birdlife, if you’re lucky you can also spot several mammals, such as wild boars, wild rabbits, foxes and some endangered bat species. As to the Rocha da Pena’s plant life, if you stop for a moment to appreciate it you’ll be surprised to learn that this small area contains more than 500 species. Some have medicinal properties: St John’s Wort (which acts as an analgesic, diuretic, etc.) or Maidenhair (used in cough syrups). Wild orchids, lavandula stoechas (topped lavender) and rosemary constitute further highlights. Wildlife is just one of many convincing reasons to visit the Rocha da Pena however. This rocky massif can look back over an eventful past, greatly affecting the history of the Algarve, which you can find out about on a journey through its architectural heritage. In addition to various caves, seemingly retaining the smell of a distant past, highlights include the Algar dos Mouros, a cave situated at the top of Rocha da Pena, where in the past Moors took refuge in their quest to re-conquer the nearby settlement of Salir. For a concentrated vision of the Algarve’s natural wonders, be sure to visit Rocha da Pena.
