TODAY’S BEST BET: The Romanovs Leave the Building Династия. Фильм 12-й – Истребление корня/Dynasty. Film 12: “Tearing Out the Roots” (Documentary. Russia, 2013)(TV Tsentr, 13:30 & 03:35) The endgame surrounding the fall of the Romanov dynasty was chaotic and sporadically marked by tragedy (just the dynasty’s origins had been), which makes it hard to summarize events in a reasonable and watchable way for a wide audience. Director A. Pishchulin has done a creditable job at it, both throughout the series and with this earnest finale, effectively bringing to bear the work of a number of respected Russian historians (including Kennan Inst. alumni E. Anisimov and S. Mironenko) in a format that aims at being family-accessible (“по-семейному”) without oversimplification or condescension. The result is definitely worth watching, and represents a promising start for the collective popular reassessment of the House of Romanov that is so long overdue. The casting of these 300 years by Pishchulin & Co. suggests, and quite rightly, that the key questions are not the traditional Russian finger-pointers (Whose fault is it? How do we punish them?!?) but rather the more sober and practical Why did events so transpire? and What does the result mean for us now?
