TOO PRETTY FOR PLYWOOD ALTHOUGH LUCIEN TREMBLAY wouldnt think so. The master carpenter uses plywood like Michelangelo used marble. Or stone. But parked right across from me now is a truckful of some of the prettiest logs that have ever passed through our town - certainly a giant step up from the semis of little more than clearcut saplings we usually see. DAN MORRISEY of Bairdsville is driving them from the Plaster Rock mill to Columbia in Presque Isle where these will be spun into veneer to make plywood, and hes been in the business for over 40 years. Costs have skyrocketed - unlike income, of course. Hes had to leave the province to find insurance, for example, at about a third of what he was being charged here - for a policy from the same company! - and fuel prices have been migrating up on BOTH sides of the border, but hes only allowed to buy one tank a week US where its cheaper. And then theres the paperwork. I told Dan those logs of his looked good enough to eat - and he trotted off to Marys Bakeshop for some more palatable fare... but maybe not from his wife hes been keeping waiting - with the said paperwork - while hes explained a bit more about the forestry business to the man who wants to be his mayor.
