TOP FIVE SCARY MOVIES YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS HALLOWEEN: As a longtime horror film aficionado (I have watched literally thousands), it is with great joy that I now unveil my official Halloween 2013 Scary Movie Picks! These will be generally universally-watchable flicks, so dont worry about content...that said, they are probably best left unwatched by kids under 13 unless your youngns are stout (like mine) or you dont mind them sleeping with you for the next week or so... #5: Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981, Made for TV) - This movie scared the living daylights out of me as a child. A unique take on the classic vengeance-from-beyond-the-grave story. #4: Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (G) - Now, to be fair, you should probably watch both Frankenstein and The Wolfman before you see this one, and it might even be helpful to squeeze Ghost of Frankenstein as well, just to get some back-story, but this one is the most entertaining (there is an amazing gypsy drinking festival song halfway through) and easily the scariest of the bunch (Lon Chaney is tortured and terrified, Lugosi is creepy and cool, and the first five minutes of the film are horrifying enough to make up for the rest of the films hokiness). Try to remember that though the plots are slightly tongue-in-cheek they were also shocking and scandalous in their day. #3: They - (PG-13) - Look, its just creepy. Very creepy. If you ever believed in the Monster in the Closet or The Boogeyman or were simply afraid of the dark as a kid, this one is guaranteed to give you goosebumps. #2: Night of the Living Dead (1968, UNRATED - Do NOT let kids under 13 watch this). While any given episode of TVs The Walking Dead is far more graphic, the horror element of NOTLD lingers long after the first time you watch it. There is a reason this film had a huge impact on our culture. Ultimately there is no happy ending (the earmark of a good scary movie if you ask me)- at the end of the world, our greatest enemy is ourselves. #1: Look, Psycho is rated R, and so is The Exorcist. That leaves Jaws (1975, PG) - This movie launched the career of the worlds most successful director, and it had a deep psychological impact on more people than probably any other film ever made. Two notes: Da dum, and you know instantly what it is. The movie poster alone is the stuff nightmares are made of. See it before you go swimming. That is all.
