TOW LAW WAR MEMORIAL World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information Compiled and copyright © transcribed Dave Charlesworth 2007 researched Martin Edwards 2007. The memorial is situated on the A68, at the southern end of Tow Law, on sharp right hand bend junction of Wolsingham Road with Bridge Street and High Street. It takes the form of a marble figure of a soldier upon two sandstone steps and a marble pedestal with ionic pilasters at each corner. Soldier stands with rifle, bayonet missing, at the ready and gestures as though warding off the enemy. The names are listed mainly by Regiment with rank but have beenj sorted into alphabetical order here for ease of reading and research. Note: For those not familiar with the story of the Cunard steamship RMS Lusitania, she was a British passenger liner, carrying a number of Americans, torpedoed off the Irish coast by the German submarine U-20 on 7th May 1915. The sinking and subsequent deaths of several civilians is cited by many to be one of the first modern examples of total war.
