TRACK OF THE DAY: The Mars Volta - Drunkship of Lanterns (live version). It was yesterday that the sad news began to filter through the music world that Isaiah Ikey Owens, keyboardist extraordinaire, had passed away in his hotel room, while on tour as part of Jack Whites touring band. In recent years his main outlet has been recording and touring with White, but of course, before that Ikey was best known as the keyboardist of modern prog-rock champions The Mars Volta. Interestingly enough, in a band with two very dominant leading figures, he achieved the honour of being the longest serving member of the band other than its founders (Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler Zavala), remaining with the band from their inception in 2001 until 2011, when he was dropped abruptly after Rodriguez-Lopez simply did not invite him to take part in the bands tour that year. Undoubtedly his keyboard wizardry was a huge part of the Voltas sound, and on this particular track (from their still-amazing debut Deloused in the Comatorium), hes in full flight. R.I.P. Isaiah Ikey Owens, December 1, 1975 - October 14, 2014. Thanks for the good tunes, and in particular the four times I witnessed your brilliance (with Volta in 2007, 2008 and 2010, and with Jack White in 2012).
