TRAINING TIP TUESDAY: If you like it, capture it! Here, 14 week-old Ty demonstrates the power of capturing. His owner noticed that he was lifting his paw when he sat, so for fun, I started clicking when the paw was in the air. Just a few repetitions later, and he had it! Next step is to put it on cue - Wave! - and only reward it when we give the cue. Capturing is simply marking/clicking and reward the behavior when you see it happen. No commands no verbal cues or hand signals, just the dog figuring out, Hey, wait a minute. IM making that click happen when I do THIS! Capturing isnt just for tricks, you know. Its great for building attention around distractions. How? Easy Peasy! Try standing on your porch or in your driveway with your dog on-leash. Now stand still and wait. Wait....wait...wait...THERE! The instant your dog looks at you, CLICK (or Yes) and reward! Repeat until it your dog is looking at you more than the neighborhood. Now take it on the road and practice in different locations. The best thing about capturing behavior, especially good manners like sitting, looking at us, etc., is that our dogs learn to problem-solve rather than wait for us to constantly tell them how to behave. I dont know about you, but I find its much easier to quietly reward good behavior than have to constantly bellow commands to get it from my dog. What behavior will you capture today?
