TRAVEL DISPATCH #3 - JUNE 24, THURSDAY - SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA - ATHE CONFERENCE - [ASSOCIATION OF THEATRE IN HIGHER EDUCATION] Well, as far as days go, this one was pretty special. The big dreaded keynote moment came and it was really fun and rather joyous. Joan Lipkin inspired me at breakfast. Meeting and watching Harry Elam and Luis Valdez get lifetime achievement awards was beyond the beyond. An impromptu tribute to Jose Esteban Munoz was deep and powerful. Tiffany Ana Lopez and I started by taking a selfie on stage with 700 academics, scholars, teachers, artists and administrators behind us. And sitting there in the audience were so many friends, old pals I hadn’t talked to in years and one of my idols Holly Hughes who I adore. When I think of great American artists, I think of her. Rick DesRochers who worked with me on Electricidad at the Goodman Theatre was there and it was great to see him. So many great people. As part of the keynote I read from St. Jude, a piece about my father’s passing. Afterward so many people came up to me to talk about their own familial losses. It was intense, gratifying, moving and one of the most humbling things about doing this work. The keynote was okay, but it was the audience that was divine.
