TRENTON — A West Ward man was shot in the head yesterday during a daylight homicide in the gentrified Mill Hill section. Quadir D. Keys, 19, was gunned down just before 3 p.m. on the 200 block of Mercer Street, police said. No arrests had been made as of late last night, and police were unsure of the motive behind the killing, but said they were familiar with Keys. “We’ve had dealings with him in the past,” Lt. Steve Varn said. Long considered an enclave of safety and quiet, Mill Hill yesterday was a crime scene, with stately brick buildings and arbored lanes looking out onto unfamiliar crime scene tape. “I heard two shots, and I thought it was something falling off the building,” said a man who was cleaning the interior of Grant Chapel AME Church at the end of the block. The man, who did not want to give his name, said he soon saw police cars descending on the neighborhood but he quickly went back to work. Police officers dispatched on a shots-fired call at 2:58 p.m. arrived to find Keys lying in the street, police said. He was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later. The only description of the gunman that police have is that of a black male wearing tan pants, a blue shirt and carrying a handgun. Investigators were seeking to interview witnesses and get a description of any potential suspects. They’ve recovered what they believe to be Keys’ vehicle, Varn said. Detectives will be looking at Keys’ background, along with his actions over the past few days. Potential conflicts, gang affiliation and connections to other crimes are all under investigation, Varn said
