*****************TRIBUTE TO RUDY REGALADO********************** Its all a matter of love; the more you love a memory the stronger and more robust it becomes. One lives in the hope of being a good memory. Rudy will never be forgotten, by the thousands of lifes he touched, in every part of his life. When we remember him he is always with us. We pay respects, give honor and homage to his work in Music; Salsa, Latin Jazz and Latin Rock. We must continue with it and carry it on because you know he would want it that way!!!!! Rudy passed away at the age of 67 yrs. in Las Vegas on Nov. 4, 2010 from pneumonia. As we near the anniversary date he departed we are remembering him and want to introduce him to the younger generation. We want to inspire others to love and advance music as he did. We want to share his journey towards Mastering the Salsa, an “On-2″ dance step pattern, music rhythms and fulfill the Rudy Regalado Foundation’s vision of helping the underprivileged children. Words are never adequate in moments like these. There are things that we dont want to happen but have to accept, things we dont want to know but have to learn, and people we cant live without but have to let them go because that is the path of life. Let memories of the times shared give comfort; for his life was rich because of his family, his friends and the musicians who surrounded him. Venezuelan Regalado was largely a self-taught Timbalero and studied at the Pablo Casals Conservatory of Music. He turned heads as the percussionist for Latin rock band El Chicano in the 70s. He played a fiery timbales and formed his own band Chevere in 1983, creating a massive fan base in the Southwest. He generated considerable airplay with hits “Viva Tirado” and “Tell Her She’s Lovely”, which they wrote for the T.V. show Baretta. He once stated he wanted to educate his fans in the art of being a Timbalero. He explained that the sound of the timbales was like a Cáscara, (shell) and a very common timbales percussion pattern. The Timbales are two single headed drums made of steel of two different sizes. The two drums are mounted on a metal stand. The naming of the drums refers to the two different sounds the drums produce when hit with a stick. One low and warm, representing the female part (hembra) and one higher and more aggressive, representing the male part (macho). The clave are two wooden sticks hit together. The bell is a special woodblock mounted on the Timbales set. The bell is usually played during the chorus and the more energetic parts of the song. Regalado’s career spanned over 50 years and he performed in a variety of top venues and events, including the House of Blues, Fiesta Broadway, the Queen Mary, the Hollywood Palladium, and the Playboy Jazz Festival, and toured throughout a host of countries and continents, including Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Europe. Chevere reunited for a concert in San Francisco in 2009. Regalado recorded and appeared with other artists including Tito Puente, Aretha Franklin, Jose Feliciano, the Zawinul Syndicate, Quincy Jones, Alphonse Mouzon, and Caravana Cubana. He appeared with Lucy Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. on their “I Love Lucy 50th Anniversary T.V. show”, American Bandstand and the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He was in various films; Skeleton Key, Pepe Plata and Clubhouse.
