TRIBUTE TO THE BLACK SCORPION The news of d death of Rtd Brigadier Adekunle, popularly called Black Scorpion was devastating. Brigadier Benjamin Adekunle, the Ashipa of Ogbomosholand was a gallant, fearless, brave, valiant and courageous civil war hero. He was the Commander of the famous Third Marine Commando Division of the Nigerian Army. He was a great warrior and soldier whose heroic performance contributed in no small measure to the success of d Federal Republic of Nigeria against the Biafran. His Division fought where the war was the fiercest, brutal and vicious. Okigwe was one of d strongholds of d Biafran rebels. Gen Adekunles Commandoes overran them and sent the rebels scamper for safety. The mere rumour that Black Scorpion was coming sent shivers down the spines of the rebels who ran before tasting his vituperation. Gen Adekunle virtually single-handedly won the war for Nigeria. According to one of his colleagues, he was described as d greatest, most courageous, most disciplined and d most effective general in d history of d Nigerian Army. What a comment! What a eulogy! He had d misfortune of not seeing through d war he had virtually won. Few weeks to the surrender of d Biafran rebels, a bitter politics cropped up. One rookie soldier, Olusegun Obasanjo was brought in to take over of d Third Marine Commando, reaping where he did not sow. The heroes are overshadowed by the mediocre. What are we going to say about Gen Babangida, Gen Dongoyaro, Gen Useni, Gen Bamaiyi, Gen Adisa, Gen Danjuma etc who have no good records in the public domain? But where are d Benjamin Adekunles in our present Army? Some daring, dreaded and audacious soldiers who can enter Sambisa Forest and do the unthinkable, bring out not only those girls but also hand cuffed Shekau and his top commanders? Gen Babangida had destroyed them leaving the Army with toothless bulldogs. Where is d Third Marine Commando Division? Is the Division still existing? Brigadier General Benjamin Adekunle, Nigeria will never forget u. Rest in Peace. I doff my cap for u SIRRRRRR!
