TRIVIA: HISTORY 101 SAN Pablo de los Montes was a visita of the town of Bay. The church and convent mentioned by Gaspar de S. Agustin dated back to 1586 and its first prior was Fr. Mateo de Mendoza. Originally it was called Sampaloc because there were so many tamarind trees. There used to be 2,000 tribute payers but these had been scattered to create other towns like Lipa, Rosario, Sto. Tomas and others. For this reason the riches of the land and areas of Pangjayaan, Manintja, Galanuu, Patac-paquin, Bitin-Olila and Cococ became part of other towns and Batangas province.
