TROPIKOS (https://facebook/events/1575157016036206/) Collaboration exhibition between Brazilian and Thai artists (Sponsored by Brazil Embassy in Thailand) Opening reception: January 24th 2015 7:00 pm Exhibition duration: January 24th 2015 - February 28th 2015 Place: HOF ART SPACE Tropikos: the Greek word meaning “full round”, it is the Earth’s region bound between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. It’s the maximum path of the sun’s rays on the earth´s surface, the solstices. The metaphor for this region of the globe and the meaning of the term “tropikos” is very significant. Besides covering Brazil and Thailand, it symbolizes the growing importance and expansion of emerging countries and former colonies of the Eurocentric axis which, for centuries, dictated the rhythm and the master narrative of art history. The depolarization of the centers of power and influence occurred not only in economic and political fields, but also in art and culture. The shared focus on colorful imagery, adoration of nature, and conceptual modernism unifies the tropikos. Today this axis, which has long been overlooked and usurped, significantly supplies the rest of the world with its raw materials, products, art and throbbing human capital. By representing a small segment of the recent contemporary production in Brazilian and Thai art, the TROPIKOS collaboration exhibition presents three Brazilian artists: André Mendes, Fernando Franciosi and Juan Parada and 3 Thai artists: Chalit Nakpawan, Torlarp Larpjaroensook and Jackkrit Anatakul. These 3 Brazilian artists are based in southern Brazil, in the city of Curitiba. They have been actively developing their work in the national and international circuit for approximately ten years, both in individual and in collective researches. With a similar background, they are each teamed with 3 Thai artists that are based in Bangkok and ChiangMai, also active in the national and international art field. As “Tropikos”, their different cultural backgrounds may bring diverse inspirations; however we see that by living in this special region these artists exhibit many similarities in their character. If we could remove their ethnic and national context, the overall taste, direction and message in their work would be indivisible. This exhibition showcases all these differences and the similarities together to create the new “Tropikos’ Land” a hybrid tropical culture, based on combining references that come from their common points of perception. This show has been structured in 3 groups, each teaming a Thai and Brazilian artist in collective harmony and conflict. Andre and Jackkrit unify to bring bold color theory and tropical esthetics into play. Juan and Chalit stay rooted in nature and emulate the tropical balance of modernity and elemental forces. Fernando and Torlarp continue to evolve the conceptual modernism of the tropics thru minimalist design and the patterns of the tropical mentality. The environment they have created in Hof Art and its surroundings is one of a modern tropicalism: a new world, a unified culture, the new Tropikos.https://vimeo/115867675
