TUESDAY TESTIMONIAL: Our family began seeing Dr. Stickel in the spring of 2005, eight months after we were in a deck collapse accident that involved twenty one extended family members posing for a photo at a reunion in Missouri. Both my husband and I suffered broken backs among other injuries. Our two children, age five and one at the time, had been seated on our laps when the deck fell. We were in the process of moving from Wisconsin to Iowa, and after our release from our respective hospitals we had no home in which to recover. The insurance companies argued about our health coverage. We spent weeks in hospital beds at the home of relatives in Missouri before being transported to Des Moines. The traumatic experience was hard on all four of us in many ways. Two years later this story is still hard to tell. We had regular appointments with our orthopedic surgeon who reported the progressive lost height of our vertebrae from one month to the next and referred us to physical therapy when we requested it. He pronounced us done when our bones were considered healed. We still had pain, however, and we thought that in addition to regular exercise, addressing the tissue surrounding and supporting the bones in our spines would be important to minimize pain and promote healing of our whole selves. Dr. Stickel, referred by a colleague of my husband, began working with us. I was afraid at my first adjustment, and it left me hurting and crying for the rest of the day. It was a huge emotional experience to begin actively seeking healing. But we returned the next day. I could tell it helped me. The most important thing I want to stress about Dr. Stickel is his positive outlook and ongoing cheerleading for our familys health. Dr. Stickel adjusted us daily at first, then twice a week, and now weekly on an ongoing basis (the kids go bi-weekly). He has been professional, friendly, and encouraging while we have had ups and downs with pain. Dr. Stickel has also been incredibly understanding and accommodating with our financial difficulties as we have awaited liability settlements month after month. The staff has been great, patiently listening as I sometimes vent about the legal system, the health care system, and such. I bought my orthotic sandals here and wear them everyday. We are purchasing them for several extended family members as well. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Stickel and his practice. In addition to making progress on my back, I never knew that my head and neck were so stuck, before or as a result of the accident. Now when I drive I notice that I can rotate my head almost as well as an owl! We are now riding bicycles again, which is wonderful. Our kids look forward to their adjustments--a high compliment! I am convinced that their treatments have made them run faster and straighter. Thank you Dr. Stickel!
