As an impressionable 10-year old drummer in 1984, Deane stumbled across the incredibly musical and focused drumming of Phil Gould and his band Level 42, a musical discovery that would literally alter the course of his life forever and secure his yearning to pursue a career as a lifelong professional musician. After wearing out three cassettes of their True Colours album, Deane dove deep into the breadth of Phils work, studying his open-handed technique and his unique approach to the drumkit. Fast-forward thirty years, and things come full-circle as Deane and Phil chat from Tokyo about Phils experience with the legendary band, why he bowed out eventually, and what his playing and lyrical approach was to some of Level 42s greatest and most memorable hit songs. Phil also explains how his long journey through the pop radio landscape ultimately uncovered a true passion for writing and recording his own material and collaborating with the other musicians in new and inventive ways.
