TURTLE TRAFFICKING IN PUERTO RICO. Eight people are being arrested and sentenced to five years in prison along with a hefty $250,000.00 fine after illegally trafficking sea turtles for human use and consumption. The accused individuals are all Puerto Rican locals, residing in the municipalities of Patillas and Arroyo. The have been accused of selling the meat of 15 Hawksbills and 7 Green marine turtles. Both of these species are listed in the IUCN Red List for endangered species. The Green sea turtle listed as endangered and the Hawksbill as critically endangered. Both of these species of marine turtle are protected under Puerto Rican federal law.
