(TW: suicide) As we talk about the tragedy of Leelah Alcorns death, Id like to throw out a general reminder that its not okay (or accurate) to say that one person drove someone else to suicide. Suicide is complicated and almost never has a single cause. Pointing a finger of blame is never an appropriate reaction to suicide. Alcorns death is a tragic reminder that cisgendered people have a very long way to go in learning about trans issues, and a sickening jolt of awareness for the abuse that trans people continue to face. The appropriate reaction is to move from this awareness toward actual change.
