Tabitha writes: I have a reading question. My 6 year old son is reading at a 5th/6th grade reading level (according to his last assessment which was a year ago). We homeschool (Unschooling mixed with Charlotte mason philosophy) so reading is a huge part of how we learn but I dont force certain texts (where the Unschooling comes in). He will not pick up a book that a) does not have pictures b) looks too thick c) has small print/hard words. Lately unless its captain underpants/Geronimo Stilton etc... (Which he reads and laughs through in less than an hour) he refuses to read more than three chapters. Yet he will stay awake for hours reading picture books, easy readers and usborne/DK encyclopedias. Any advice?sympathy? From other parents dealing with something like this? I know hes still young and he plays for the vast majority of his day but I just want him to be able to get into at least one book at his level. Im honestly afraid that this is going to start spilling over into anything that looks too hard/challenging. Weve tried Peter Pan, Eragon, Harry potter, Artemis fowl, chronicles of narnia, adventures of Tom Sawyer ... Weve read out loud, drawn pictures to go with readings, acted out scenes, watched the movie after and still I cant get him to read anything even close to his level. When we read out loud he disappears into his made up world in his head and just ignores the readings...if I give him a fidgit he just turns it into a plaything. Thanks for at least hearing me out.
