TaiJiQuan Q&A 1: [single whip] played in [Dao is natural] 太極拳問與答 1 - 用 [道法自然] 去打 [單鞭] The core of Daoist teaching is [Dao is natural 道法自然]. Strangely, most of the TaiJiQuan play today is NOT natural at all, but actually very ‘robotic 機械人’!!... also, people seem just happy to ‘wave’ their arms around & simply ‘imagine’. They appear NOT knowing their own objectives of training. Have you ever asked yourself that do you really ‘understand’ what are you doing? If the answer is NO, then why do you still follow the crowd in doing irrational & illogical movements in what they called ‘TaiJiQuan’. BUT, was that really what the Daoist priests were teaching in old China? What happen to the vital teachings of [13 Essences]? Only children will ‘imagine’ things.. do not only talk about the teachings… please show them through your movements!!!... let others appreciate your genuine ‘understanding’ of what you are actually doing!!... and how TaiJiQuan is being expressed in the core Daoist teaching - [Dao is Natural 道法自然]… For example, the [single whip] move… does your movement resemble anything that look like a ‘whip’? Do you know that the entire motions have included not only the first [5 Essences] of YinYang principle but also the [8 Essences] of [shoulder bump Kao靠]; [elbow Jiao 肘]; [fingers Cai採]; [throw Lei摟]; [back palm strike as ‘whip’Ji 擠] and [wrist strike En 按]… NO!! Then, you have missed all those ‘Heavenly glories’ (techniques)… Perhaps, it is time to ask the person who is standing in front of the class that ‘where have all those techniques gone??!!.. If the answer were that TaiJiQuan is not being taught as fighting arts, then someone has to study some Chinese language before they start making comment like this… the character [Quan 拳] actually means [fist]... YES, those moves not only carry skills of ‘self-defense’ but also most importantly, their lines of motion carry ‘objectives’ for the trainers!!!.. [Intention]. Is it not training of the mind?... Now you know… good luck in your training… Dr. YK Leung PhD. (aka Shi DeLon)
