Taiwan Occupation. Citizens Declaration. Translated. _____________________________________________ 23rd March 2014 From the third-floor balcony of the Legislative Yuan Citizens’ Declaration: I hereby announce that the third floor balcony of the Legislative Yuan is now occupied. I will now recite our citizens’ declaration. This is not a document of our demands or an official action plan, but a call to face ourselves and to contemplate the very core and value of the issues in front of us. We are not here today to create fear, but to cast out our fears. We are here today because we’re afraid. Weve come to the streets because were afraid of an uncertain future, afraid of losing the values that we cherish, afraid of being alone, afraid of being different from our own. We are afraid, and the ones we are fighting against, they are afraid too. Because of their fear, they lie, they refuse to communicate, refuse to tell us the truth. They are afraid that the Trade Arrangement theyve secretly signed us into will not pass. They are afraid of history’s judgment, they are afraid of consequences they do not understand. We fear the overwhelming, oppressive power of our government. A government that chooses to treat us dishonestly. A government that has deprived us the chance to think for ourselves. A government that makes us fear for ourselves, and faced with the unknown, we are only allowed to submit to their judgment. But a government should not bring fear to its people, and we must not allow such a government to cast its fear among us! On the surface, it would seem that we have a civilized social system, that our politics are democratic, that we are protected by our laws. We feel as if we’re standing on solid ground, but deep down we know that these are but fragile illusions, that the things that weve build with our lives can disintegrate in an instant. Weve watched as our government concoct lies after lies with their warped justifications to deceive us. We have so many capable individuals among us today, yet we are shoveled and thrown down the hole theyve dug, robbing us of the chance to create a better future. We can no longer depend on the government to guide our conscience, to educate us to be independent or to live without fear. So how do we face this? By being honest with ourselves; by being aware and responsible for our own citizenship. This is the only way to stand against our fear. We must decide for ourselves. We must build the lives we want with our very own hands. We must become more than the submissive blueprints they have devised for us. We must force our government to be honest and fair. Only then can we live as a society free of oppression, only then can we overcome our fears in the face of the unknown. We must educate ourselves and learn with our own eyes, fight with our own hands and hold our futures together, and not hold on to empty numbers. We invite everyone, all of us, to join us on this journey. We cannot guarantee when we will succeed, but now, this journey has begun for all of us, and together, we will arrive at our destination soon enough: A place where we can live equally and free of oppression; where different opinions can come together and share the common trust that we are all working towards a better future. No doubts to muddle the fight, no more tyrants to rule in the name of our fears. We are here to send a message: We’ve come to take back our voice, for you, for everyone, and for those of us who are yet to be born. Wherever you are, whoever you are, please, don’t stop fighting what they make of you, don’t stop fighting the fear you feel, don’t stop fighting those who will oppress you, and together, we will get to the better place we want to be. Finally, we hope that everyone will have to strength to stand up when it counts, to do what we know to be right. I now announce the end of the occupation. We may leave, but our declaration lives on. youtu.be/WKrEXPqlU8o
