Take Five today! Sunday, July 14 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Is that a good sign? People who believe in omens think that apparently unrelated events actually have a connection, as when they call something a “bad omen.” Many ancient people, like those of the time of Jesus, tended to be superstitious in this way. A sudden thunderstorm or the appearance of a strange bird or comet meant something big was going to happen, whether good or bad. This very human belief came from a desire to know the future and thereby to control it. Christianity offers the possibility to leave superstition aside. Christ’s spiritual power offers a very hopeful message. The future is not a thing to fear and try to predict but to live into with faith. Today’s readings: Deuteronomy 30:10-14; Colossians 1:15-20; Luke 10:25-37 (105) “For in [Christ Jesus] were created all things in heaven and on earth . . . whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.” preparetheword
