Take a Deep Breath .......... On Mars!! When we finally land humans on Mars (in 20-30 years?) astronauts need Oxygen to breath but unlike the oxygen rich atmosphere of earth, the thin atmosphere of Mars is nearly all carbon dioxide. So we need to manufacture oxygen on Mars (also needed to fuel the rockets that will lift the astronauts off the surface of Mars to bring them back to earth). We were super excited to learn 2 days ago that a proposal we (JPL in partnership with MIT) submitted to NASA to put a small scale machine on Mars to produce oxygen won a tough competition. We will send it to Mars in 2020.
