Take a look at one of our young King cobras, and read on to learn a bit about this incredible species. The King cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, is truly one of the world’s most impressive snakes. It is the longest venomous species and has been known to reach lengths of over 18 feet! The King cobra gets its scientific name because, unlike other cobra species, King cobras feed primarily on other snakes and have even been known to consume each other on occasion. Although the venom of the King cobra is not as toxic as some other species, the large amount of venom that can be injected in a single bite make this a very dangerous species. Fortunately, bites to humans are rare. King cobras are also unique in that they are the only species of snake where the female will actually build a nest and protect the eggs while they incubate. There can be anywhere from 30 to 50 eggs in a single clutch. King cobras are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN and are protected under CITES II. The zoo has been fortunate to have recently acquired two young King cobras. Keep on the lookout for them when you next visit the zoo!
