Take care of the orphans. In Islam, its the right of a child to be protected, cared for physically, psychologically and emotionally. These rights don’t change when they become orphans. Prophet Mohammad (saw) himself was an orphan and there is great importance set in the Quran and Sunnah in regards to the treatment of orphans. According to Islam, orphans are those children who are left with no protection because their fathers have passed away. Many orphans have no source of income and/or a guardian to take care of them. This is where we as a community have to step in and aid the orphans, even if the mother is still living. There may be more orphans now around the world, than ever in history, because of conflicts and natural disasters. Children are especially vulnerable without a father or mother and for that reason, helping an orphans is mentioned many times in the Quran and carries a great reward. If it is within your means to help an orphan, please help a child in need. The Prophet (saw) said: I, and the guardian of an orphan (whether he is his relative or not), will be in Jannah like these two fingers and he joined his two fingers. (Reported by Al-Bukhari) In another Hadith he (saw) also said that, Whoever caresses the head of an orphan (in affection), solely for the sake of Allah, a good deed will be written to his account for every hair over which he passed his hand. – (Narrated by Abu Hurairah) “They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say, “Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.” Surah Al-Baqarah (2:215) Prophet Muhammad (saw) said, “The best Muslim house is a house in which an orphan is well treated; and the worst Muslim house is a house in which an orphan is badly treated.” (Narrated by Ibn Majah on the authority of Abu Huraira) And give to the orphans their properties and do not substitute the defective [of your own] for the good [of theirs]. And do not consume their properties into your own. Indeed, that is ever a great sin. Surah An-Nisa (4:2) May Allah guide and protect the orphans in the world and make us a means of their support. Ameen.
