Talk about controversial, provocative, overgeneralized & presumptuous! But, its an opinion piece & Zeke Emanuel, the director of the Clinical Bioethics Department at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, is entitled to his opinion. I get what hes saying--agree with some of it (wasting vast resources on end-of-life-care & unnecessary surgeries with poor prognoses)-but I disagree with his over generalizations & presumptions. Guessing this editorial is a companion to this newly released report: tinyurl/lrqbuqd I just printed this out to read on the plane today! Would love to discuss it with all of you! Especially, those of you who are 75 or over. What do YOU think? As for me---Im all for nature taking its course, & I certainly dont want to extend my life without my health, mobility & faculties--but, it can be a win-win if people take care of themselves, eat right, exercise, and naturally are able to avoid the kind of medical care that Zekes talking about. Dr. Esselstyn was well over 75 when he had his bike accident & broke his pelvis. Thank goodness he chose to keep on keeping on--and head to the hospital to make that happen!! Just saying….
