Talk presented by Dr. Kolapo Adelodun The Last Meeting GUARDING AGAINST DETERIORATION OF YOUR HEALTH STATUS Like any other living organism, the effectiveness and efficiency of human body decreases gradually as he gets along in years. This is further worsened by the rapid urbanization and its attendant pollution imbroglio. It is against this background that it becomes imperative for us to guard against deterioration of our health status. Prominent risk factors that have been implicated in health deterioration include unwholesome diet, unhealthy life styles and environmental pollution. Therefore, guarding against deterioration of our health is a function of how best we are able to handle these risk factors. Ad initio, food was expected to serve as mean of both sustaining and rejuvenating the body. However, it is unfortunate that this became a mirage as urbanization and industrialization set in, which inadvertently occasioned the significant portion of our diet comprising processed foods. The following advice is therefore germane to guarding against deterioration of our health: • Use only potable water for both drinking and other domestic application such as cooking and cooling. • Reduce the intake of processed foods and beverages, especially the energy drinks. • Avoid the intake of ‘bad fat’- the saturated fats, which can increase the possible occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. “Bad fats” are often of animal origin. • Take foods such as soy products, which scavenge and eventually sequestrate the bad fats from your system. • Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables on a consistent daily basis. • Eat a balanced diet. • Increase the consumption of plant derived foods, especially those rich in antioxidants. • Exercise regularly. • Observe basic hygienic practices at all times. • Reduce your exposure rates to pollutants and carcinogens. • Avoid health threatening practices such as smoking and drunkenness. Your health is your wealth, therefore strive to maintain it
