Tammany Tammany was a chestnut American TB racehorse, owned by Marcus Daly. His Dam was Tullahoma, a granddaughter of King Tom who was the leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1870 and 1871. His sire was Iroquois, the first American horse ever to win Englands Epsom Derby. Tammany was the retrospective American Horse of the Year in 1892. He was trained by Matthew Byrnes. Tammany was the favourite horse of his owner Marcus Daly. In 1893 there was a rivalry going on between Tammany and the favourite horse of the East, Lamplighter. A race was set up for the two horses in Guttenburg, New Jersey. Daly said If Tammany wins Ill build him a castle. The horse won by 4 lengths. His castle is located on a hill about a mile east of Hamilton. It is rumoured that fresh roses were delivered daily to Tammany when he retired to his elegant stall. The castle was converted in 2007 to a modern residence. Daly had his beloved horse immortalized in the Montana Hotel bar via an inlaid wooden portrait gracing the barroom floor.
