Tangasseri keeps date with tradition Jan 2, 2015 08:34 AM , By Special Correspondent A scene from the traditional Tangasseri New Year pageantry held on. Photo: C. Suresh Kumar Hundreds of persons living in the colonial Anglo-Indian enclave of Tangasseri in the city took part in the traditional pageantry for the 64th consecutive year to welcome the New Year. The event is being organised by the Coastal Young Men’s Society Library. The pageantry began as a procession from the library premises and moves through the streets of Tangasseri to culminate at the harbour complex beach for presentation of various cultural programmes. Thousands of people from far and near arrive at Tangasseri in the afternoon on January 1 every year to witness the event. Participants in the procession depicted the past glory of Tangasseri by setting up floats and presenting the cultural traditions of the enclave. In addition to traditional aspects there was samba dancing and mime depicting contemporary events. The beauty of the pageantry is that all taking part in it engages in some form of dancing, most of which is western. For the onlooker, it resembles a long queue of group dancers on the move dancing all the way to the beach. The organisers said that every year the participation has been increasing. There are also many from Tangasseri who are employed far away and even abroad coming down mainly to participate in the event.
