Target of Putin is not exactly the Crimea, but all Black Sea offshore. Western Oil and Gas companies will be ousted from the development of oil and gas deposits in this region opening the way for Gasprom and Rosneft. Russia is trying to oust Western oil and gas companies from the development of oil and gas deposits in Crimea Black Sea region. Kremlin simply tries to remove Western competitors such as Eni S.p.A., Italia, Electricite de France, Chornomornaftogaz and Water , ExxonMobil, Shell, Petron. Ukraine has signed a production sharing agreement (PSA) with Eni, Electricite de France, Chornomornaftogaz and Water of Ukraine LLC for the development of the Subbotina, Abikha, Mayachna and Kavkazka blocks in the Black Sea in November 2013 (reported by KyivPost on November 27th 2013). Now all these deals went to the dogs. Before the overthrow of former President Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine was on the verge of signing a deal with a group, including Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B), that was prepared to spend $735 million to drill two wells off Crimea’s southwest coast. “Exxon and Shell are now in a legal limbo,” Chris Weafer of Moscow investment group Macro Advisory told Bloomberg News on March 11, 2014. There are more and more declarations from self-proclaimed government of Crimean about nationalization of the property and companies in Crimea, Among them ChernomorNeftegaz which is Crimean subsidiary of Neftegas Ukraine be nationalized by Crimea. I suppose that the new deal on development of Black Sea oil and gas deposits will be provided most probably to Russian companies GasProm and Rosneft. Interest of Roneft in this region is indirectly confirmed by fact that Rosneft made geological exploration of Russian side for Black Sea (in the area known as Tuapse Curve) To my opinion Crimea is not sufficient. All Black Sea and Azov Sea region shall be controlled in order to have sustainable results. Russia most probably is planning to seize not only Crimea but other Eastern and Southern Regions of Ukraine, first of all Odessa, Nikoleav, Kherson and Zaporaozhiy, Donetsk.
