Tariq Ramadan recently said in the Can Muslims Escape Misogyny Conference: Im not afraid of using the word feminism as long as I get to define it Question, if a word can be defined anyway you want, why so much fuss is given over the need to use it? If I invent a word Gobbledegork, will others find it compelling to use just because they get to define it? No. Why? Because Gobbledegork has no meaning. Likewise, if someone isnt afraid to use a word, as long as they get to define it, then would any Muslim use words like polytheism, and claim that it only means a God with many names. And would they not be afraid to use the word paedophilia, and define it as merely someone who likes children (i.e. doesnt hate them). Of course, he wouldnt use those words. Why? Because those words have meanings which people in the West know, and hate. So then, Tariqs use of the word Feminism, must be down not to his being able to define it anyway he wants, but in his desire to use words that the social forces in the West, the media and the government, insist Muslims to use. The Western culture insists that Muslims only use their approved words, like Secularism, Liberalism, Human Rights [according to the Western conception] which carry already established meanings in the West [being inventions of the West]. These meanings are antithetical to Islam, and contradict Islamic worldview and teaching at it most fundamental of levels. So why should we use such words, when the Prophet Muhammed (saaw) didnt even permit the Muslim to drink water using cups associated with wine drinking?! In the end, the Muslim naively pretending these words mean something else, may please the West by using it, but it will be at the expense of fooling himself, and through him, others.
