Taught the Cain and Abel story this morning. Reminded that the MT has 4:8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother but does not contain what he said. The Samaritan Pentateuch, LXX, Vulgate, Targum, and Syriac all have what he said: Lets go out to the field. While it is possible that the MT is original, it is more likely that these ancient texts preserve the original reading here. No help from the DSS at this point, but the phrase was probably נלכה השדה, as in the Sam Pent. Emanuel Tov (221) states that a Masoretic punctuation note also supports an omission here. NRSV and NIV11 adopt this reading.
