Tax Alert!!! The income tax season is upon us and there have been reports of phone calls to the public with people claiming to be from the IRS. If you receive a phone call and the caller identifies him or herself as an IRS agent, claims that you owe taxes and demands payment by wire transfer, credit or prepaid debit card, please end the call. This is a scam and thousands of taxpayers are being targeted by these scammers who threaten you with arrest or deportation. The IRS will not demand payment by credit, prepaid debit card or wire transfer and they will always contact you by mail first and not by phone. The caller will tell you the last 4 digits of your social security number and then ask you to enter your credit/debit card information to stop them from prosecuting you. The scammer will then use this information to steal your identity. Most of these calls are coming from 202 area codes and your caller ID may indicate IRS. Don’t be alarmed, just hang up.
