Tea Party Patriots, Here is a copy of the reply to Stephan Weldoms article published in the Transcript last Thursday. Feel free to share it, if youd like. Hopefully, we can educate some people. Dont forget that Dr. Blick will be our speaker on Oct 24th. Im sure you remember what an excellent speaker he is. Tell everyone!!! More to come... Mallory Stand Up For the Tea Party The Norman Tea Party is just a group of grassroots citizens who expect our government to do at least two things – follow the government set up by our Constitution and apply all laws equally to all citizens without favoritism to any particular group (in particular, well-connected or politically powerful groups.) However, Mr. Stephan Weldom s letter to Tom Cole ( Norman Transcript , Oct 10th, “Stand Up to the Tea Party”) has cast the Tea Party negatively. He should be aware of a number of things. The framers of the Constitution set up the House of Representatives as the keeper of the purse precisely to prevent the overreaching of an “imperial” Presidency and thus to support the checks and balances that are built into our system. Thus, it is their prerogative to allocate funds. The recent crisis was of Mr. Obama ’s making, when he said, in essence, “give me 100% of what I want.” When a Presidency chooses to negotiate on its own terms and not in the spirit of the Constitution, it is bullying the House and not the other way around. It is the House’s job to filter the political aims of the Executive branch through a reasonable budgeting process and to prevent any undue overreach. Also, the President threatened our stock market and our citizens with “default.” This is just another example of his bullying, since default is impossible if he follows the Constitution (14th Amendment, Section 4) and pays our debts first. There is plenty of money to pay our bills (current tax revenue = 10 X the interest on our debt). Unless he chose to ignore the Constitution, Mr. Obama ’s spending spree would have been curtailed had the House not raised the credit limit. While this has a multitude of problems, it certainly would not have been a default as we have been led to believe. As a nation, we simply cannot keep spending more money than we take in and digitizing the difference. Consider the President’s attempts during the shutdown to hold the American people and our veterans hostage by deliberately trying to make the “shutdown” as painful as possible. Apparently, this was an attempt to make the citizens put pressure on the House to compromise their positions on ObamaCare, the debt limit, and the continuing resolution. In legal circles, this is called extortion. It also demonstrates that our President does not have the welfare of our citizens at heart, but views them as pawns in order to achieve his political aims. There has never been such a situation before in the history of our Republic. The Tea Party applauds the Republican’s attempts to hold the President and his Senate accountable for this impasse. Four things have been accomplished by insisting on compromises. First, this focus on the debt ceiling and funding has for a time taken the wind out of the sails of all of the other misguided Progressive/Democratic issues, from gun control to immigration to approving the UN treaty on arms control, which most Americans reject. Second, it has shown the President’s true colors, his disdain for the welfare of the American people, and his willingness to go to any lengths to get what he wants. Third, the Sequester, which has taken the limits on discretionary spending back to 2008 levels, is still in place. And fourth, the House has given the American people hope that someone is actually standing up for them and representing their views in Washington . A small group of people can actually make a difference! If you consider the Tea Party patriots as “rascals” for resisting to the loss of liberty being promoted by Mr. Obama , then we accept the title gladly. But remember, to side with this administration is, among other things, to accept the NSA invading our privacy by spying on Americans; the IRS breaking its own regulations to play favorites and to harass those it opposes; the CIA fomenting problems and meddling in the affairs of other countries; and crony capitalism corrupting our business culture. In addition, ObamaCare is destroying jobs; adding hidden taxes; invading our privacy by providing our health records to the IRS; and destroying the best healthcare system in the world. These destructive policies are forcing Americans to accept a vastly reduced standard of living, all in the name of “wealth redistribution”. For these and many other reasons, we must not permit these abuses to escalate. In the long term, defending our Constitution, which affirms our unalienable rights, the separation of powers, personal liberty, religious freedom, and the rule of law, is always the right thing to do. As concerned citizens, it is what we must do. The Norman Tea Party
