Tea workers’ body to protest Centre’s decision Correspondent SILCHAR, Dec 5 – Unhappy with the Centre’s decision to stop the supply of rations to tea workers from January 1, 2015, the Barak Cha Sramik Union has decided to stage a protest against the Narendra Modi-led BJP Government. Members of the Parishad, along with those of the Barak Valley Tea Youth Welfare Society, have demanded immediate withdrawal of the decision so that 19,28,719 families belonging to the tea garden community in the State get the rations which form part of their wages. Rajdeep Goala, Lakhipur and MLA and general secretary (organisation) of the Barak Valley Tea Youth Welfare Society, said that “the decision has hurt the sentiments of the workers who are giving their best to the tea industry. This is an anti-industry decision by the Government which will severely impact the tea workers. According to a notification issued on August 20, 1956, the tea industry management in Cachar district should supply rice to the workers and their dependants at Rs 20 per month. As much as 13,000 metric tonnes of rice and aata were collected by the tea garden managements for the tea garden families so far. But if the decision of the Government comes into effect, the workers and their families will face a serious food crunch, Goala maintained. “We want this decision to be withdrawn immediately. Otherwise, there will be a massive protest against the Government in the coming days,” the legislator warned. DN Baroi, assistant general secretary of the Barak Cha Sramik Union, said that the Assam Cha Majdur Sangha will host a joint meeting with the Barak Cha Sramik Union in Dibrugarh on December 9 over the issue and the union will go ahead with whatever is decided in the meeting. It may be mentioned here that there are 70,000 workers and 30,000 regular casual workers across 304 tea gardens, including 104 main gardens in the Barak Valley. assamtribune/scripts/detailsnew.asp?id=dec0614/state053
