Teachers discuss professional problems and work out solutions. With an aim to develop and equip teachers with latest techniques and ways of teaching, the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) arranged a two-day Teachers Training Workshop at the OPF Girls College, F-8/2. OPF Girls College Principal Shahina Masood, as chief organiser, took special care to make the workshop a success along with the assistance of the organiser, Farhat Mujahid. Teachers from 23 schools of the OPF from all over Pakistan had been invited to the workshop. About 70 teachers participated enthusiastically despite extremely hot and humid weather. The aims and objectives of the workshop were to refresh the knowledge and training that teachers had received prior to their job and during and to provide them an opportunity to discuss their professional problems and work out solutions to them. The two-day workshop was divided broadly into four sessions. Director General Education Qaiser Nazir inaugurated the TTW with the reiteration of the aims of OPF to provide teachers with up to date training and awareness to enable them to teach and train their students to cope well in the modern world of drastic progress and development. Shahina Masood in her inaugural speech welcomed the participants and expressed her delight on being the host and chief organiser of the workshop. The workshop started officially with the presentation of Shahina Masood on the characteristics of a great teacher. She, very effectively, catechised the qualities of a great teacher in the light of expectations of students and statements of scholars and critics. Anees Qidwai shared her knowledge about the importance of libraries to inculcate reading habits among the students and their significance in bringing up an omniscient nation. OPF Public School Kallar Syedan Principal Tabassum Naz asserted the importance and effective methodologies of lesson planning. The second session started off with Rabia Zafar’s presentation on classroom management. Her lecture was activity based and participants learnt new and effective techniques of managing the classroom. Dr Ajmal Chaudhary from Allama Iqbal Open University presented a lecture on school management emphasising the significant role of teacher as a leader and organizer. The last lecture of this session was on stress management by Saima Ashraf, a competent psychologist and lecturer at OPF Girls College Islamabad. She demonstrated a few exercises to help relieve from stress. The first session on second day was inaugurated by the tutorial of Rukhsana Saeed, Acting Principal OPF School Rawalpindi. She demonstrated stick figure drawings as an effective teaching aid and their utility in teaching specifically teaching of English. Ayesha Irfan briefed on the Development of creative skills in students and shared effective and conducive ways of encouraging creative skills in students. Irum Mumtaz focused on teaching of tenses in English and methodical ways to teach them. Sumera Ashraf delivered presentation on teaching biological concepts in an interesting and effective way. Urdu teaching techniques were discussed by Afshan Qadeer in her presentation. Ghazala Zahid demonstrated on making chemistry fun to learners. After her lecture participants took off for an hour’s lunch break. Final session had started with a presentation on Thematic Teaching. She emphasized on the significance of acquisition of knowledge in a holistic way through thematic instructional method. Later in the session Asma Siddiqui delivered a comprehensive lecture on teaching of Social Studies focusing on its significant role in the modern world. The workshop ended with Riffat Asif’s tutorial on making and evaluation of examination paper. A formal closing session was held at the end of the day. OPF Managing Director Iftikhar Babar showed his contentment and pleasure on the successful commencement of the teachers training workshop. The chief guest awarded certificates to the organisers, coordinators and participants. The chief organizer of the workshop Shahina Masood presented college crest to the chief guest Iftikhar Babar and DG Education Qaiser Nazir at the end of the ceremony.
