Teachers earn Crystal Apples Thompson Education Association gives out 21 awards BY SHELLEY WIDHALM Reporter-Herald Staff Writer Berthoud High School teacher Kim Skoric likes to see students come and go out of her classroom. As a winner Friday of one of the Crystal Apple Awards, she found the honor “an amazing validation” of what she loves to do. She teaches English, serves as department chair woman and advises the student council and student newspaper. “I love that kids come to my room, and they leave my room with futures, lives and oh-so-amazing choices,” Skoric said following the hour-long recognition event at the Chilson Senior Center. “It’s the reason I do everything I do.” Skoric was among the 21 winners of Thompson Education Association’s 13th annual Crystal Apple Awards. The winners were recognized with a crystal-shaped apple on a plaque, and the top three at the elementar y, middle and high school levels received $250, as determined by an out-ofdistrict evaluator. The other two cash winners were Lindy Jones, a first-grade teacher at Laurene Edmondson Elementary School, and Theresa McCarthy, a seventh/eighth-grade teacher at Lucile Erwin Middle School. The award winners were nominated by other teachers, parents and students that included 14 elementary, four middle and three high school teachers. The elementary school winners included: • Jennifer Fodness, kindergarten, Monroe. • Leslie Jones, fourth/fifth grade, Van Buren. • Lindy Jones, first grade, Laurene Edmondson. • Susan Kelley, second grade, Truscott. • Wendy McNaney, second grade, instructional coach, Mary Blair. • Samantha Minnis, first grade, Cottonwood Plains. • Candace Owen, fifth grade, Namaqua. • Cindy Sargent, fourth grade, Centennial. • Meg Schneider, first grade, Winona. • Lori Smeltzer, music, Carrie Martin, Winona. • Laura Spratt, kindergarten, Berthoud. • Carol Thomas, third grade, Garfield. • Bernadette Wagers, kindergarten, Sarah Milner. • Laura Wynkoop, third and fourth grade, Big Thompson. The secondary school winners included: • Andy Crisman, Walt Clark Middle School. • Jeff Karas, Bill Reed Middle School. • Jacob Marshall, Lucille Erwin Middle School. • Theresa McCarthy, Lucile Erwin Middle School. • Paula Cooney, Thompson Valley High School. • Lindsey Dunn, Loveland High School. • Kim Skoric, Berthoud High School. The Crystal Apple Committee honored Laurie Shearer, president of the TEA, for her 12 years of service. She will be retiring at the end of the 2013-14 school year. Andy Crisman, one of the award winners, will take her place. “Laurie, thank you for your tireless effort you put in ever y day for our association,” said Jill Date, TEA secretary.
