The recent statement by the Ethiopian PM Hailemariam regarding the change of policy toward Eritrea is interesting. It was aggressive. considerate of the fact that the Eritrean armys defensive capacity is in ebb (both in terms of soldier morale and number). Reference to one man rule in the statement- an attempt to portray this as aggression against the ruling party, alluding that this new policy has nothing to do with Eritreans or Eritrea as a state; which in my opinion is a misleading tactic. Make no mistake- history cannot be discounted, and if anyone thinks a better scenario could emerge in Eritrea through aggressive tendencies from Ethiopia that could stretch to a full scale war; they are in for a surprise. The PFDJs sheltering of the #DEMHIT and considerable investment in them could be seen in light of this- they expect possible confrontation with Ethiopia, and DEMHIT are to be factored in in the PFDJs defense equation. The recent #serawithdri operation, if true, cannot be seen in isolation from this recent change in stance or policy. Lastly, it is one thing to fight the unjust regime in Eritrea, it is another thing to, in anyway, favour such a move by Ethiopia, and worse to expect it to be a means to the end (regime change) many Eritreans seek.
