Teaching Tip: As the school year is approaching, you may wish to consider how you are going to handle breakfast. The reason I mention this is because breakfast is often the start of the school day, and it can really affect how your day begins for both you and your students. Weve tried a variety of things through the years for breakfast in hopes of a smooth start to our day! Our latest plan is one weve used for two years, and it seems to work well for us. Ill share it with you to get you thinking about possible options. For our kiddos, we alternate making oatmeal and making scrambled eggs. While this is not rocket science, I will share why this works well. First, oatmeal can be made and left on the stove on warm in a big kettle. It is quite forgiving as to when it is eaten. So, once it is made, my older kiddos eat it early when their day begins and my younger kiddos can eat it when they wander down later (because we let our littler ones sleep later). This gives my older boys breakfast right away and allows them to get started on their work when the house is quiet. It also has a hot breakfast ready for my little ones. We also have yogurt and fresh fruit on oatmeal days. On our scrambled egg day, we simply have each child crack one or two eggs in a cereal bowl, stir with a fork, and place in the microwave for 45 seconds for 1 egg and 1 min. 15 seconds or so for two. Once the eggs are done, our kiddos then add either a bit of cheese to the top or salt. This is another easy hot breakfast that can be made individually as the kiddos are ready. We add toast with peanut butter and half a banana to the meal on egg day. While you may not love these particular choices, maybe they will get you thinking of how you could streamline your breakfast to get your kiddos going in the morning without all of the production that breakfast can bring. We all sit down together for both lunch and our evening meal, so these are our family together times. Ponder your breakfast, and how...
