Technology is always a good barometer for our past. In 1995, I was sitting in an apartment when my phone (land line) rang. It was a friend asking me if I had heard the news about Jerry passing away. I turned on my basic cable and waited for the Noon news to see if anything was even mentioned. The local radio station was the best source for news, and they announced a celebration of life in Reid Park that I took the Sun Tran bus to and enjoyed some hours with folks I never seen before, but knew as my friends. Jerry was gone from us, and my world was never going to be the same. Jump to 1999, on the anniversary of that sad day. In the call center where I worked, my digital phone chimed, with my sibling on the other end, telling me the news of the passing of our baby Sister Nancy. My email soon had my flight announcement for my arrival to New York for her funeral, as well as pics of Nancy in many facets of her life. I notified other folks via email and text. All these years later, my Mom, Felicita Ita Garcia-Ortiz Sister Tammy Ortiz, and Brother Rob Lo, can all read this on Facebook and together, with technology, can remember the life of Nancy, and miss her collectively. Jerry was the music I discovered later in my life than I would have wanted to now in hindsight. He got me to pay attention to the actual playing of an instrument, and the ability to handle feeling any way, and still perform. I will always want to hear his guitar, even in my sleep, and the playlist that will sound off my leaving this plane one day, is filled with his creations. That playlist is a product created after the passing of Nancy. Her funeral included my Brother playing Bob Marley as we laid her in the ground. Nancy told me one of the most important things that I use to this day, and have taught my children. I miss her in every way, and know she watches over me, even as I have become someone who faith is not a paramount part of. Rest In Peace, Jerry and Nancy. Hopefully the afterlife has the both of you to say hello to when my time comes. That would be a pretty fun party :)
